Drinking Aspect of Community Residents and Its Related Factors

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the drinking aspect of community residents in order to provide basic data for efficient implementation of moderate drinking program which is an important health promotion program.
The subjects of this study were 1,150 community residents who lived in six cities. Data were collected from September 20, 2000 to November 30, 2000.
The results of this study can be summarized as follow.
1.The drinking rate of male was 53.8%, while that of female was 12.7%. Therefore, the total drinking rate was 31.7%.
2.Those who had never visited medical institutions and those who had agony and stress showed high drinking rate. The drinking rate was also high in the groups of ¡®smoking¡¯, and ¡®having irregular meals¡¯. Those who did not exercise frequently and those who did not eat a snack between meals displayed high drinking rate.
The drinking rate was also high in the groups of ¡®taking medicine for promoting nutrition¡¯, ¡®preferring animal food¡¯, and ¡®drinking a lot of coffee¡¯.
3.The most preferable liquor was soju. Male preferred soju, while female preferred beer. Low educated people preferred soju, while highly educated people preferred beer. Laborers, residents in towns and villages, and those who had monthly income of below one million and four hundred ninety thousands and villages, and those who had monthly income of below one million and four hundred ninety thousand won preferred soju.
Housewives, and those who had monthly income of above two million won preferred beer.
4.According to the age of starting drinking, the age of 20 to 24 was highest. In the case of drinking frequency, the rate of ¡®no¡¯ was highest (46.0%).
5.40.7% of the respondents tried to give up drinking or drink moderately. The rate of trying to give up or drink moderately was higher in the groups of ¡®male¡¯, ¡®twenties¡¯, ¡® married¡¯, ¡®low educated¡¯, ¡®living in town or village¡¯, ¡®farmers or fisherman¡¯, and ¡®monthly income of one million to one million and four hundreds ninety thousand won.¡¯
6.According to the reasons of stopping drinking, the rate of ¡®becoming unhealthy¡¯ and ¡®worring about health problems¡¯ were highest. The variable of influencing drinking were sex , age, living area and smoking.
